Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) is the original planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of the Disney Parks and Resorts business division. Representing more than 150 disciplines, its talented team of Imagineers is responsible for creating Disney resorts, theme and parks, hotels, water parks, real estate developments, local resorts, cruise ships and new media technology services. It is in the Show Systems studio that we create magic. Our processes and tools take us from concept design or mock-up to production, assembly and complete installation. The Show Mechanical Engineering Manager reports to the Show Systems Studio Manager and leads a team of 10-15 engineers, designers and analysts.
Job Summary:
Show Mechanical is about the engineering and design of mechanical systems associated with animatronic figures, show equipment, and other visual and special effects equipment in the spaces we run in our theaters.
Functions:
He is responsible for managing and executing the entire show planning process, showing events from mock-up to design and production.
Develop and manage a team of engineers and researchers focused on the development of advanced animatronics, show event applications, and show base scenes. Analyze and perform engineering analysis and simulations, design drawings and wood prints, project plans, test plans and concepts of work.
Lead and disseminate system interface information from the demo to other teams within Imagineering.
Develop and manage department budgets and resource plans. Lead, write and contribute to the development of engineering principles and design practices.
Identify and drive new technologies and strategies in engineering and design processes that improve system performance, efficiency, or power. Present technical ideas to a wide range of technical and creative professionals.
Organize equipment and provide field installation assistance (some travel required). Lead engineers and design teams through requirements.
Ensure compliance of the engineering and design process with the delivery of the project.
Permission required:
Five (5)+ years of managing a multidisciplinary engineering team. Extensive knowledge of animatronics, mechanical systems (mechatronics), controls, robotics and special effects/equipment.
Demonstrated experience in design engineering practices, component selection, and "open book" design. Experience leading or managing multi-million dollar investment projects.
Demonstrated project management skills such as resource mobilization, schedule development, multi-objective decision analysis, investment and risk management. Demonstrated ability to write and review technical documentation such as requirements specifications, theory of operations, scope of work, risk analysis, and acceptance test procedures.
Demonstrated ability through advanced CAD technology such as organic or natural shape surface models. Advanced knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining and welding, 3D printing, and plastic and silicone applications.
Advanced knowledge of mechanical design and measurement drawings and repairs (ASME Y14.5). Demonstrated experience in mechanical simulation work and finite element analysis, multibody dynamics, modal analysis, hyperelastic materials, etc.
Experience with systems or robotics simulation tools such as MATLAB & Simulink, Recurdyn, ANSYS, Gazebo.
